Osaek or five-colored tteok is traditionally dyed with natural colorants including 현 hyeonmi(Brown rice), 흑미 heukmi(Black rice), 쑥 ssuk(mugwort), 단호박가루 dan hobak-garu(pumpkin), 흑임자 가루 heuk-imja garu(black sesame).

In korean culture it symbolizes purity, wealth,prosperity, and happiness.The strands are cut into coin-shaped pieces for use in tteok guk (rice cake soup).
